Strengthening community connections

The COVID-19 lockdowns showed both the strength and fragility of our communities. Many people rallied to support their neighbours, local shops, and community groups. At the same time, restrictions left many vulnerable South Australians feeling lonely and isolated.

The Inclusive Neighbourhoods project worked to reduce social isolation by encouraging people to build and maintain connections with their neighbours. It also promoted ways to include those who might otherwise be left out.

The project shared information about existing neighbourhood initiatives and offered guidance on starting new ones — from community gardens, sports clubs, and local cafés, through to church groups and organised events like Park Run.
