EYDN bring youth digital storytelling and disability advocacy workshop to Mt Gambier

The Enabled Youth Disability Network (EYDN) are bringing the first digital storytelling and advocacy workshop, designed by and for young people living with disability, to Mt Gambier on October 4.

This free workshop is aimed at young people living with a disability, aged 14-30 years, who would like to learn how they can advocate for themselves effectively and safely, said EYDN Project Leader, Sarah Footner.

‘There will be guest presenters including lawyer Natalie Wade, and youth disability advocates Jamila Main, Bethany Cody and Lauren Spear. They will be talking about advocacy, their lived experience and the platforms they use to create change. Participants will also get the chance to explore different social media platforms and learn how to build content and their own brand and community.’

‘This workshop, which will also be rolled out in Berri and Pt Pirie, is about empowering young people living with disability to use the power of social media to advocate for themselves and create powerful societal change.

‘We live in a world that is more connected than ever, yet our society remains disconnected from the inequality that is so prevalent for young people living with disability. Our generation has seen the power of social media in seeking equality and justice, so we want to pass on the digital skills and knowledge young people need so they can effectively advocate and share their voice too.’

The workshop will be facilitated by Mt Gambier local, EYDN Country Connector Ally Finnis, who lives with a vestibular disorder and identifies as neurodivergent.

‘Having been involved with several advocacy initiatives over the years, I have seen its power to create positive change. Recently, we’ve seen a surge in the number of young people living with disability using social media to communicate their stories and the challenges facing them - and the disabled community more broadly,’ said Ms Finnis.

‘This workshop is a great way for young people to connect with their peers in the regions, learn from our fantastic presenters and build digital storytelling and advocacy skills in a relaxed and safe environment. I’m very excited to be working with EYDN to bring it to young people living with disability on the Limestone Coast.’
