This submission is in response to the Australian Government’s Draft Baseline study for the National Human Rights Action Plan. Its purpose is to provide further comment regarding the content of the Baseline study in order to inform the Australian Government of an accurate and full picture of the current status of human rights.
Purple Orange believes that the Australian Government’s consultation on the Draft Baseline study is important since it is pivotal to the identification of key priority areas of action to be incorporated in the Human Rights Action Plan. There is a national commitment to “ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities” through the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by Australia in July 2008. While Australia has in place formal mechanisms designed to protect the rights of people living with disability, it is our experience that such mechanisms frequently do not penetrate the everyday life of people living with disability. This consultation provides the opportunity to strengthen Australians capacity and practice to advance and uphold human rights.
