Why work matters — in the words of people with disability
Employment opens doors. It offers independence, connection, and the chance to contribute skills and passions. Yet people with disability are still far less likely to find work than their non-disabled peers.
Through our Road to Employment project, we asked people with disability to share their experiences of work and job-seeking. These stories highlight the barriers people face, but also the value of inclusive workplaces and the strengths employees with disability bring.
Jane’s story
When Jane lost her job, she shared how employment gave her choice and control in her life — and why finding meaningful work matters to her future.
Cheralyn’s story
Cheralyn spoke about her employment journey, including the frustration of others focusing on her disability instead of her abilities.
Trudy’s story
Trudy worked with SA Ambulance for more than 30 years. A few simple adjustments — like a height-adjustable desk, arm support, and adapted keyboard — allowed Trudy to thrive in her role.
“I love my job with a passion. I’m consistently there, I’m a good worker, and I’ve made great friends at work.”
Nick’s story
Nick started as a client with Determined2’s world-first Immersion Therapy program. When staff saw his strengths, they offered him a role as Client Relations Officer.
“Passion is everything. I get to connect with people, and as a person with disability myself, I can have open and honest conversations.”
Natalie’s story
Natalie has always felt called to support others. She told us how a memory from childhood shaped her career path and continues to drive her passion for helping people in vulnerable moments.
