I’m a 48-year-old artist and carer with disability, living in Mount Gambier. I have a diverse background in art and technology, but at the heart of everything I do is a desire to express the challenges of people who struggle or are misunderstood. Through my art, I try to communicate emotion and perspective through whichever medium seems appropriate for the piece.
My wife and I both live with disability, and that’s what led us to co-design. We wanted to share the barriers we face in day-to-day life—things that might not be considered in a regular design process. I’ve been part of a co-design group creating resources for inclusive workplaces, and I’m currently involved in the Purple Orange website redesign. My wife has joined me in this one, which has been a great experience for both of us.
Being part of co-design has been completely positive and validating. Working alongside people who understand and accept my situation has been amazing. It’s a space where we can learn from each other, share experiences, and use them to make a difference.
The biggest thing I’ve gained from this process is a real sense of inclusion. Speaking up about non-inclusive experiences I’ve had, only to find that others have faced the same thing, has been powerful. The co-design space is welcoming and safe, and it’s made me realise just how important lived experience is in creating meaningful change.
I’d love to dedicate more time to advocacy and awareness, and this has been a great start. There are so many things that get overlooked without the perspective of people with disability. What seems like a simple thing can be the difference between accessible and not.
