Language matters because words shape attitudes.

In this video, five people with disability share how language can harm, include, or affirm identity and experiences. They discuss the impact of words like “inspirational”, “special”, and “wheelchair-bound”, and explain why the words we choose matter. The conversation explores person-first and identity-first language, challenges common stereotypes, and offers practical guidance on respectful communication.

Most importantly, it’s a reminder that language should connect us — not separate us.

If you would like to be a better ally to the disability community, language is a great place to start.
