PO Risk Enablement Policy Position

JFA Purple Orange has published an updated version of our “NDIS Safeguards and Risk Enablement” policy position paper. Previously published in January, this version has had some minor tweaks to the original.

As part of the NDIS policy roll-out, a focus has been given to the notion of safeguarding people living with disability. JFA Purple Orange welcomes an increased and consistent focus on safeguarding people living with disability, particularly the important functions carried out by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

However, we advocate that NDIS policy related to safeguards and risks should also focus on ‘risk enablement’ in support of helping people living with disability to lead valued lives with a full range of options. We feel that a mindset that ‘risk equals harm’ and that protecting individuals and service organisations has been prioritised ahead of genuine choice and control for people living with disability.

The reality is that we have to face a variety of risks in everyday life, so a big part of helping people living with disability to live a good life means navigating risk.

This paper outlines JFA Purple Orange’s policy position
