DEAA member Jane Quirk, has this to say about the peer network.
"The establishment of the Disability Elders of All Ages (DEAA) peer network evolved out of a group of people living with disability undertaking some formal training with a focus on Confidence and Capacity Building. This training was to prepare people living with disability for the introduction of the NDIS roll out.
People who attended the training were excited by the possibilities the training presented to them. This resulted in the formation of the DEAA peer network.
Having established the group, the challenge was now to gather their various ideas and distil these into some workable goals for the group.
The members of DEAA defined a list of goals for a small reference group of volunteers to be incorporated into a strategic plan. I am one of the original members of the reference group and we meet to plan activities for the wider group. Some of our outcomes have been the facilitating of a range appropriate strategies to develop new skills for our members, participate in the writing of grant applications to get funding for the running of the DEAA and book guest speakers.
My vision for the group now is to grow the membership numbers of the group to share information and learn from one another. A particular focus is to reach out to people living with disabilities in the rural area to enable them to interact with our group and benefit from the activities of the peer network." - Jane
