Video Transcript
[Gavin] Thank you for letting me in your house today. We are going to do some recording about a peer group, Our VOICE SA.
Are you happy with that?
[Tiffany] Yes I am happy with that.
[Gavin] Ok I guess the first thing, what is a peer group?
[Ian] Bunch of people with intellectual disabilities right, meet around the place, talk about their issues and all that, their life stories.
[Tiffany] And we also talk about advocacy issues, and how to make the government understand.
[Libby] They make new friends.
[Tiffany] And they’re friends for life.
[Ian] What you get being part of peer group, you learn stuff, and you get skilled at it.
[Tiffany] It’s opened a wealth of information up.
[Libby] And also gave me the knowledge that I have rights.
[Gavin] I am part of the Our Voice SA, and if gives me a lot of confidence to be who I am. Do you think that being part of a peer group will give you confidence?
[Ian] In a peer group, a lot of people are coming out of their shells. What I’ve got out of being in a peer group, you know why? See the joy in people starting to speak up.
[Tiffany] Yes it has made me very confident in myself. It has also helped me um live independently.
I remember coming home and saying to my dad that I want to move out. Yeah.
[Libby] Before I joined Our Voice SA, I didn’t have any confidence at all. Now I have a lot of confidence. I love that because I do public speaking now.
[Gavin] So I think the peer group has educate me that just because you got a disability that doesn’t stop you from following your dreams. And I see you are following your dreams.
Thanks again for today. I will sign, sign off now. I am Gavin Burner. Bye Bye.
