This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

The Julia Farr Association is a purpose-led organisation working towards a more inclusive world where people with disability have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. We administer trust funds designed to assist people with disability in South Australia.

This fund is available to assist people with disability who are on low income to access items that will improve their quality of life. Grants of up to $3,000 per applicant per financial year are available for one or more of the following purposes:

  • Personal and household items.
  • Services of a temporary nature when other funding is not available.
  • Activities that enhance quality of life.

Previous applicants have used grants to purchase electrical equipment, kitchen equipment, computers etc.

You can apply for more than one item, but we may not be able to fund everything you have requested. Please identify which of the items you have applied for is most important to you.

If you are applying for a smart device (phone or tablet) please include the costs of screen protectors and cases in your application.

Grants cannot be used for:

  • Medical equipment
  • Vehicle purchase or maintenance
  • Improvements to rental properties that you cannot take with you when you move home
  • Retrospective costs
  • Items that we would expect to be funded by NDIS or other government agencies.

If applying for a technology item (e.g. an iPad, an automatic door opener, a communication device or other specialist equipment) designed to make your life easier, an agency called Stretchy Tech is available to help you decide what could work best for you.

Stretchy Tech only charges for this service if your grant application is successful, and the costs can be included in that grant application. You do not have to use Stretchy Tech and using Stretchy Tech does not guarantee your application will be successful. To find out more visit the Stretchy Tech website or contact them at hello@stretchy.org.au or by calling 1300 043 837.

Guidelines Part 1

Am I eligible?

The eligibility criteria respect the original purpose of the funds. To be eligible you must:

  • Be over 18 years of age.
  • Live in South Australia.
  • Be on a low income (e.g., receiving a Disability Support Pension or equivalent).
  • Have one of the following:
    • An acquired brain injury.
    • A degenerative neurological condition.
    • A physical disability that:
      • Impacts mobility, requiring day-to-day support (e.g., personal care, mobility aids, assistive technology).
      • Is lifelong, either from birth, early childhood, or resulting from an accident or certain illnesses.

Because of the restrictions on the use of the funds, a number of disabilities are not eligible. These include disability caused by chronic health conditions such as POTS, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, fibromyalgia, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis; age-related conditions (including dementia); intellectual disability; mental illness; and ADHD and autism. If you are unsure if your disability is eligible, please contact us before you apply.

When can I apply?

Applications are accepted at any time and funds are distributed every two months. We do not make emergency grants.

Guidelines Part 2

How are decisions made about grant applications?

It is important to us that we make the very best use of the limited funds we have available. A committee of people with disability help us to decide this.

In coming to a decision about your grant application, some of the things we consider are:

  • Are you on a low income?
  • How the grant will give you more control over your life.
  • How the grant will support you to take part in activities with family, friends and community.
  • How much you are asking for.
  • Whether you have included enough information to show how you will spend the grant, including how much the item will cost, and that you have found a fair price.
  • If the grant is a part-payment for an item that costs more than the grant amount, where the remaining money to pay for the item is coming from.
  • Will you be able to provide receipts to show you used the grant to pay for the items agreed by our committee?

Decisions are guided by:

  • The trust funds available – we have limited funds and cannot fund all applications.
  • The nature of any previous grants we have awarded you.
  • The role of government/public funds in providing the items and services you have requested.
  • Who will own and use the item/service, and whether the item or service will stay with you. For example, we are unlikely to support a grant for a fixed air conditioning unit for a rental property, if the air conditioning unit will stay in the property when you move out.

We hope this information helps you when making a grant application.
